The Teletubbies is an award winning children’s’ television programme produced by Anne Wood and Andrew Davenport of Ragdoll Ltd. Created for the BBC it was first released in 1997 and was aimed at 1, 2, 3 and 4 year old children.
The Teletubbies production was designed to stimulate the imagination of the very young and develop their thinking skills. The idea was to make children laugh and build a bond between the Teletubbies based on trust and love. By making children laugh was a way in encouraging them to play along and join in the Teletubbies fun.
When it first hit the screen there was some controversy over the language the Teletubbies used. Some educators thought that their gurgling baby talk was not good for children. Forty years earlier another children’s programme Bill and Ben the Flower Pot Men came under fire in the same way.
However; ten years on has shown that this is not the case and that the play language used by the Teletubbies actually perform an important role in developing a child’s speech. Children were not mimicking the play language but trying to make sense of all the situations and joining in the games with words. They were building their confidence and learning to communicate.
The Teletubbies’ programme is not about formal teaching it’s about creativity and capturing the imagination of young minds. Babies and young children respond to bright colours, different sounds and shapes that they see on TV. That’s why the programme is such a success; it’s bright cheery and full of fun.
When a child is happy and having fun they respond well to learning and their confidence grows. They become curious of their surroundings and are interested in exploring as their imaginative mind develops.
The Teletubbies’ show is all about exploring and experimenting that the young can join in with. There are songs, dances, rhymes that can help with physical expression and group activity for these pre-school children to get involved in and when the show finishes there are plenty of Teletubby toys to continue the fun.
